Children in school uniforms were seen fleeing from a series of deliberate fires inside a house in Springvale South.
Multiple fires were deliberately lit in the unoccupied premises at 15 Wardale Road about 4pm on 14 August, Greater Dandenong CIU police say.
During the fires, a gas canister exploded and damaged several windows. There was otherwise minor fire damage and no injuries, police say.
Springvale CFA extinguished the fires.
