A man was caught speeding at nearly double the limit during weekday afternoon traffic at a known black-spot on Princes Highway, Dandenong, a court has heard.
The man was detected at 114km/h in the 60km/h section, driving west past a known black spot outside Dandenong High School about 1.27pm on Monday, 7 May.
A nearby busy service station, a popular skate park and the high school were open at the time, police told Dandenong Magistrates’ Court.
Potentially Dandenong High staff and students could have been walking in the area, the court was told.
Five years ago, a 14-year-old student was fatally struck by a car on the same section of highway. This prompted VicRoads to reduce the speed limit from 80 km/h.
When intercepted, the man did not produce a drivers license. His mother’s vehicle – which he was driving at the time – was impounded.
Police told the court that there had been no car tailing him at the time.
The man told the court on 29 November that he had just started driving his mother’s Falcon three weeks earlier.
He said that before the speeding incident, a “guy in an old white car” started yelling at him while stopped at traffic lights.
He tried to overtake and drive away when he approached what he thought was an 80 km/h zone, he told the court.
Magistrate Julie O’Donnell said the charge of driving at dangerous speed at 45 km/h or more over the limit carried a potential jail term.
The man was fined $1000 with conviction. He was disqualified from driving for 12 months and ordered to complete a safe-driving education program.
