Marg Moments: One small step for sisterhood

THERE’S an old saying, “The hand that rocks the cradle rules the world”.

Now women will ‘walk the world’ in a worldwide initiative joined by members of the Noble Park Country Women’s Association and their peers from the City of Greater Dandenong and neighbouring areas.

On April 29 women around the world will hit their stride in an event titled Women Walk the World.

“We are to walk around a lake in Pakenham and the idea is to raise the profile of women,” says Yvonne Smith, secretary of the Noble Park CWA for 24 years. “We welcome any local ladies who would like to join us and if they phone me we can arrange transport.”

Established in 1958, the Noble Park CWA is among the district’s older branches.

The branch members hold regular meetings at 10am on the second and fourth Monday of the month in the Paddy O’Donoghue Centre in Buckley Street. The next meeting is today.

Details: Yvonne on 9547 7261.

School’s history

Noble Park Secondary College in Callaghan Street is a progressive college with an enthusiastic and forward-thinking principal Pam Dyson and hard-working staff.

The school is keen on setting up an association for former students and staff. The aim is to keep the present-day students and staff in touch with people from the school’s earlier years. Anyone interested in an association can email Gordon at gordon@designimportance.com.

Class of 2011

Noble Park Secondary College is extremely proud of last year’s year 12 students (the class of 2011).

Vasily Skalova was dux with an Australian Tertiary Admission Rank score in the high 90s.

Others who also also achieved scores in the 90s were Jenny Dang, Praseth Sun, Ring Zhang and Hussein Korucan. The academic success of students were acknowledged at a school assembly.

Remember the Standard?

Earlier this month ‘A moment with Marg’ had a query about a relative of the popular Swords family, which ran the Dandenong Advertiser, and another about the Dandenong and District Historical Society.

This week we have another piece of history about local newspapers. Besides the Advertiser, published from an office in Walker Street, who can recall the Standard , a newspaper that appeared on the local scene as a free bi-weekly?

The Standard, however, did not last long on the Dandenong scene. It cut back to a weekly and then left completely after a few years. The vagaries of the newspaper world!

Do you have a milestone, memory or question for Marg? Email marg@yourweekly.com.au or post submissions to A Moment with Marg, c/o Greater Dandenong Weekly, PO Box 318, Dandenong 3175.
