THERE’S an old saying, “The hand that rocks the cradle rules the world”.
Now women will ‘walk the world’ in a worldwide initiative joined by members of the Noble Park Country Women’s Association and their peers from the City of Greater Dandenong and neighbouring areas.
On April 29 women around the world will hit their stride in an event titled Women Walk the World.
“We are to walk around a lake in Pakenham and the idea is to raise the profile of women,” says Yvonne Smith, secretary of the Noble Park CWA for 24 years. “We welcome any local ladies who would like to join us and if they phone me we can arrange transport.”
Established in 1958, the Noble Park CWA is among the district’s older branches.
The branch members hold regular meetings at 10am on the second and fourth Monday of the month in the Paddy O’Donoghue Centre in Buckley Street. The next meeting is today.
Details: Yvonne on 9547 7261.

Remember the Standard?
Earlier this month ‘A moment with Marg’ had a query about a relative of the popular Swords family, which ran the Dandenong Advertiser, and another about the Dandenong and District Historical Society.
This week we have another piece of history about local newspapers. Besides the Advertiser, published from an office in Walker Street, who can recall the Standard , a newspaper that appeared on the local scene as a free bi-weekly?
The Standard, however, did not last long on the Dandenong scene. It cut back to a weekly and then left completely after a few years. The vagaries of the newspaper world!
