SFL: This time, the Dingoes hand out a drubbing

By Roy Ward

DINGLEY has been on the negative end of a few goalless days but the Dingoes made club history on Saturday, keeping Mordialloc to just eight behinds in their Southern Football League division 1 game.

The Dingoes scored a 112-point win and kept focus for the whole final term, adding this win to their upset victory over premier St Paul’s last round.

Dingoes coach Shane Morwood praised his players for their ball pressure and hard running. “It’s a pretty rare feat in any competition,” he said. “A few of the oldies at the club can’t recall Dingley ever holding anyone to no goals. Dingley have been held goalless in games but I can’t remember us ever doing that.

“We’ve have a few firsts this year. Our 100-point win earlier this season was the first time the club had won by 100 points and last round was our first time we beat St Paul’s.”

After some inconsistent play in the opening rounds, Morwood challenged his players to maintain their focus in the final term despite the match being safely in their keeping.

“At three-quarter time I said the result was definitely decided but the game wasn’t over for us,” Morwood said. “I challenged the guys to not let them kick a goal. Mordialloc had some chances in the last quarter but they missed. We achieved what we wanted to do.”

Centre half-back Andrew Forst, full-back Steve Vinen and midfielder Jackson Peet were named best players for the Dingoes.

“Frost controlled the back line and ran off and set up our attacks,” Morwood said. “They couldn’t get past Vinen all day. He would just mark the ball and bring it back out.

“Peet ran through midfield and half-forward. He had 30-odd touches and kicked four goals. He has probably been struggling early in the season, but his last two weeks were really good and he finished his work, which was pleasing.”

In division 3 matches Doveton Eagles continued to struggle against the other top sides in the competition, losing their second straight game after starting the season undefeated.

The Eagles lost to last season’s runner-up Mount Waverley by seven points and have fallen to third place.
