GREATER Dandenong Council has refused to build a speed bump in a North Dandenong avenue, despite claims from residents it has become a dangerous ‘rat-run’.

Gardiner Avenue and Warbla Street residents say that since EastLink was built four years ago the area has become a bottleneck as motorists try to avoid the tollway.

Resident Russell Murphy said he and his neighbours had unsuccessfully campaigned for the speed trap for four years.

In the avenue, a car had ploughed into a house and speeding cars ran over two dogs.

“Ever since they opened up the tollway we get a lot more cars coming through, trying to get around it,” Mr Murphy said.

“The street is already so narrow and there’s always cars parked on both sides, so with all the traffic it gets very dangerous.”

He said all but one household in the street signed a petition in October for the speed bump, “but the council flatly said no”.

Greater Dandenong Council engineering services director Bruce Rendall said a traffic survey found the traffic volumes had not increased since EastLink opened.

“The survey results showed Gardiner Avenue and Warbla Street both have relatively low traffic volumes and speeds.

“As a result of this information, the council believes there are other areas in Greater Dandenong with higher priority needs.”

Police had blamed the car crash into the house on driver error, he said.
