A woman escaped a fire at her Athol Road unit in Springvale South last Thursday.
The woman had been sleeping when she was woken about 2pm by crackling sounds and her dog barking.
A CFA spokesman said crews controlled the fire by 2.30pm but the unit was destroyed and the dog died.
