FROM Scotland to Keysborough, and multiple stops between, William and Margaret Kerr have certainly come a long way.

The happy couple celebrated their golden wedding anniversary last month, marking the occasion with an ‘open house’, where family and friends gathered and reminisced on their 50 years of marriage.

The pair were born in Scotland — Mr Kerr, 74, in Newton Grange and Mrs Kerr, 73, in Carangine — and migrated to Australia in their early 20s.

They met at a dance in Footscray, courting first, then marrying in Sunshine in 1962. “We moved to Keysborough 33 years ago when there were a lot of market gardens in the area and Lower Dandenong Road was just a dirt track,” Mr Kerr said.

The couple have three children — William, Michael and Jennifer — and five “fabulous” grandchildren.

Mr Kerr worked as an electrician and Mrs Kerr was a shop assistant and kindergarten assistant.

Mr Kerr praised his wife’s talents including knitting and crocheting, and said she’s a “wonderful cook” who loved gardening.

Mr Kerr is a vice-president of Keysborough Senior Citizens club, and enjoys deep-sea fishing.
