DANDENONG Stingrays stars were prominent in the AFL draft on Thursday night.

As expected Stingrays star Lachie Whitfield was taken with pick no.1 by Greater Western Sydney, with the Mornington youngster having been touted as the best player in the draft all year.

Lewis Pierce was also given a shot at the big time with St Kilda picking the young ruckman with its fourth round pick, no. 75. The Stingrays’ bean pole is known for his endurance and his ability to cover the ground.

Pierce, 18, represented Vic Country this year and made giant strides in the second half of the TAC Cup season, shouldering the bulk of the Stingrays ruckwork.

Fellow Stingrays Taylor Garner and Nathan Wright found homes with North Melbourne and St Kilda respectively swooping on the highly-rated pair.

But in a major draft shock, Stingrays’ co-captain Jason Pongracic missed out on selection with the tough midfielder-forward now a strong chance of being taken in December 11’s pre-season or rookie drafts.
