Betty Luxford's lifetime of giving

By MARG STORK

OBITUARY  Betty Luxford

November 16, 1925-October 5, 2012

BETTY Luxford led a busy and rewarding life as a selfless community leader.

She was mayoress three times — her late husband Bob was a Springvale City councillor for 18 years — and volunteered with Springvale fire brigade ladies auxiliary, the Red Cross, Meals on Wheels, Urimbirra Mental Health Association, was life governor of Dandenong Hospital, and Guides district commissioner.

In 1986 she was honoured in the Australia Day awards as Springvale citizen of the year.

She was the youngest of three daughters and her parents Albert and Hazel Crump owned Crump’s General Store in the heart of Dande-nong. She would fondly tell of learning to ride a bicycle between bags of flour and stock feed on the store’s floor.

When she finished school at Dandenong High, she worked with Melbourne and Metropolitan Board of Works as a draftswoman/tracer.

It was a ‘love match’ when she and future husband Bob met while playing tennis. They married in 1947 at St James’ Anglican Church, Dandenong and built a home in Ann Street.

The couple had five children — Garry, Gail, Ross, Glen and Anne — 11 grandchildren and three great-grandchildren.

Mrs Luxford travelled extensively overseas and around Australia driving a campervan herself, was a life member of Keysborough Bowls Club, keen gardener, avid reader and had a special interest in arts and crafts.

Her well attended funeral service was at the Keysborough Bowls Club.

A candle, symbolising hope, peace, and remembrance was lit during the service.
