Car mobile phone warnings fall on deaf ears

By Jason Turner

DANDENONG police are disappointed by the community’s lax attitude to mobile phone use while driving.

Statistics from Victoria Police’s eight-week holiday road blitz Summer Stay, which ended last week, revealed 68 drivers were caught on local roads using their mobiles.

Senior Sergeant Scott Roberts of Dandenong highway patrol said police would continue to target the issue. “It’s become a bit of a culture. You see it all the time, people on their phones.”

He said no warnings were given out to drivers caught. “They need to know they can’t touch their phones while driving, even when stopped at traffic lights.”

During the campaign more than 28,000 breath tests were conducted, resulting in 47 drink-drivers being caught and more than 150 unlicensed or disqualified drivers nabbed.

Another 325 people were caught for speeding offences.

“Overall, I’m fairly happy with the efforts during the period,” Senior Sergeant Roberts said. “There has been a concerted effort to try and make these Dandenong roads safer, but there will always be the ones that flout the law.”
