Segway Dandenong track derailed

An indoor Segway track in Dandenong has been closed down even before getting into first gear. The proposed Dandenong Segway Centre, featured in the Journal last year, was served with a notice by Greater Dandenong Council in December for not complying with the building code’s disability access and toilet regulations. The track for the two-wheel self-balancing battery-powered electric vehicles, on a converted first-floor office space in Walker Street, was only accessible by a staircase. Owner George Banjac said despite a surge of customer interest, it was too expensive to install a lift and toilets for the disabled. He is planning instead to start five-kilometre Segway tours around Caribbean Gardens Lake, Scoresby. Greater Dandenong design and amenity director Jody Bosman said it was “difficult if not impossible” for the indoor track to comply with the code.
