Dishing out eager, job-ready trainees

IS food the best way into a business person’s heart?

Avocare Community Care pitched for work placements for its trainee and Work-for-the-Dole workforce at a business breakfast at its Dandenong warehouse last week.

As a portfolio, the eagerly devoured smoked-salmon tarts, croissants, muffins and yoghurt-muesli cocktails prepared by Avocare’s training kitchen was impressive.

Avocare distributes more than 650 tonnes of tinned food, food staples and fresh fruit and vegetables, for 90 welfare agencies a year.

Its warehouse is run like clockwork by four eager volunteers, who are in the market for permanent work.

In all, 150 trainees go through the warehouse, kitchen and recently-opened book barn each week.

Avocare director Trish Keilty said she could vouch for several volunteers and trainees, who were job-ready and reliable in skills such as food handling, packing and forklift driving. “It’s better to get your people from us,” she said.
