SOUTHVALE Primary School students will vie for the Golden Shoe trophy this Friday.
The school is taking part in VicHealth and the City of Greater Dandenong’s Walk to School Day and will compete against other schools across the state to field the most participants.
More than $2500 worth of sports equipment was one motivation for the school community to get behind the event.
Walk to School Day will highlight the Walking School Bus initiative introduced by Greater Dandenong Council in 2002.
The Walking School Bus program involves primary school children walking to and from school along a designated walking route under the supervision of adult volunteers, usually parents, who act as ‘drivers’ and ‘conductors’.
Children are picked up and dropped off at their ‘bus stop’ each day.
Mayor Peter Brown said the program had many benefits.
“It increases both children’s and adult’s physical activity, improves children’s awareness of road safety as well as reducing car trips and therefore traffic problems and pollution in local areas,” he said.
“I congratulate the local schools who have embraced the Walking School Bus program and wish Southvale Primary School all the best for their annual Walk to School Day this Friday.”
