THE trust managing Dandenong South’s Bunurong Memorial Park has merged with one of the state’s most historic cemetery trusts.
Cheltenham Regional Cemetery Trust (CRCT) announced last week that the State Government had approved plans to merge with Brighton General Cemetery Trust (BGCT) in a move that will help to ensure the longevity of both parties.
The BGCT oversees the operation of the Brighton Cemetery, which is one of Victoria’s most historic cemeteries.
A joint statement from the trusts revealed that Brighton Cemetery’s funds were small and its future income limited, but its responsibility for maintenance would be costly and ongoing.
CRCT comprises Cheltenham and Bunurong Memorial Parks and Cemeteries. Cheltenham has its own historic Pioneer Cemetery.
“These, like Brighton, will retain their own uniqueness and be run with separate identities but with the economy of one trust, one management and one skilled maintenance division,” the statement said.
Brighton Cemetery carries with it more than 150 years of historical significance, set within the bounds of large brick walls.
