CHAPEL Road in Keysborough could have its speed limit reduced to 60km/h and even lower in school zones if a push by council is successful.
Keysborough South Ward councillor Peter Brown put a notice of motion to council this week urging the council to lobby Roads Minister Tim Pallas to approve the reduction.
The council will forward letters to VicRoads that build a case for reducing the limit.
The reduction is targeted for the 80km/h section between the proposed Dingley Freeway and Greens Road.
The first 500 metres is already a 60km/h zone, Cr Brown said.
He said the 80km/h zone was connected to Tyers Lane, Keylana Drive, Church Road and Donnici Drive – all roads feeding into booming residential estates on to Chapel Road.
Cr Brown said that with an increase in traffic, the high speed limit posed a safety threat to residents.
He said Isik College also fell in the proposed speed reduction zone, and recommended it be dropped from 60km/h to an even lower speed.
A survey in 2004 revealed that an average 2440 vehicles used Chapel Road on a weekday near the Oakwood Estate, while as many as 4020 used it per day near Isik College.
