Dandenong early childhood program picks up award

By CAMERON LUCADOU-WELLS

A GREATER Dandenong Council early childhood program was among the winners at the Victorian Early Years Awards last Friday.

The council took out the Better Access to Early Years Services award for its ‘Reaching Out’ program, setting up multicultural playgroups at Dandenong and Dandenong South primary schools and a playgroup at Dandenong Library for families on community detention.

Minister for Children and Early Childhood Development Wendy Lovell announced at the awards that the council — and three other winners — each won $15,000 to go towards their programs.

“The early years are a critical time in a child’s development and I am delighted to congratulate the winners on their work in ensuring children, particularly those from vulnerable families, are getting the best start to life,” Ms Lovell said.

The awards were set up by the state government and the winners selected by the Victorian Children’s Council.
