THE meeting rooms of Greater Dandenong Council in Springvale were transformed into a miniature picture gallery last month.
Adorning the rooms were rounded table centrepieces with fresh flowers — vivid burgundy-red gerberas, irises, lilies, stocks and snapdragons in yellow and lilac — artistically arranged on a backing of fern. On the wall were the portraits of people deemed by the city to be Living Treasures.
Then the 36 guests arrived for the annual dinner to celebrate their contribution to the city.
Portraits of the Treasures — sadly, many of whom have since died — were festooned with bunches of white ribbons. Many had devoted hours of their lifetime’s leisure to support community causes. Under each frame was a plaque outlining what he or she had contributed to the city.
The Treasures — including yours truly — were first chosen in 1997 with more added in subsequent years. Many of the Treasures are now in their 90s. Some still serve on community committees or support community activities.
For former Dandenong mayoress Gwen Jarvis, widow of the late Cr Maurie Jarvis, it was a particularly exciting occasion — she would celebrate her 90th birthday the next day.
Welcoming all present, City of Dandenong mayor Youhorn Chea said the Living Treasures program recognised people “whose lives and work exemplified all the best qualities of human endeavour — inspiration, kindness, simplicity, wisdom, courage, serenity and love”.
“As I look around the room I see many well-loved faces of people who, each in their own way, managed to dedicate their time and energy to contribute significantly to our city. Tonight, we proudly acknowledge your individual contribution and thank you for your collective passion for our city and its people.”
The mayor’s secretary, Jo Thorn, acted as hostess, making welcome the guests and councillors. Enjoying a delectable three-course meal, courtesy of Chefscene, we reminisced and rekindled many longstanding friendships.
On a sombre note, the mayor acknowledged the recent death of John Beus. There was a moment of silence to remember John and other departed Treasures — Ella Athorn, Pat Dow, Wes Eggleston, Jim Hardy, Sister Ann Halpin, Francisca Ho, Tom Houlahan, Maurie Jarvis, Bruce Patchell, Graham Thomas, Bill Toon, Wal Turner, Phyllis Yates and Eric Wilson.
Under their own initiative, the Treasures became mentors for others to follow in their footsteps, the mayor said. “Your hope, heart and wisdom reinforced the belief that there is a better future for Greater Dandenong — one that encompasses equality, acceptance and opportunity.”
