Safety seminar set in concrete

WORKSAFE Victoria will hold a seminar for workers in the concrete industry at Dandenong Workers Club later this month.
The Dandenong seminar is part of a statewide series of seminars to further educate people who manufacture, transport or work with concrete panels on safe work practices.
The director of WorkSafe’s construction and utilities division, Geoff Thomas, said the seminars would help workers to better understand the hazards of concrete building components.
“There have been a number of deaths and serious incidents associated with concrete panels in recent years,” Mr Thomas said.
“Early last week, a structural collapse of a building under construction in country Victoria resulted in one man being seriously hurt.
“There is no room for compromise when dealing with something weighing many tonnes and with the capacity to fall.
“It’s essential that people know what to do and not just rely on instinct, experience or hope for the best.
“Too much is at stake.”
The seminars cover WorkSafe’s concrete panel safety campaign, safe erection of concrete panels, and engineering aspects of manufacturing and erecting pre-cast and tilt-up concrete panels.
Full details and booking information can be found on WorkSafe’s website, worksafe.vic.gov.au/construction or by calling WorkSafe on 1800 136 089.
The seminar covering the east and south-east of Melbourne will be held at Dandenong Workers Club, 48 Wedge Street, Dandenong, on 20 June, 9am to 1pm.
