Division 2 – round 5
THE comeback kings took their rightful throne as Springvale Districts emerged from nowhere to beat Mordialloc.
Rousing a measly 11 points up to three-quarter-time, the fire was lit under the Demons’ backsides and finally started hitting up their targets and pushing through for goals.
Mordialloc was left as part of the audience in the final term – kicking only a single point against the wind – with no stopping the faster Districts.
Danny Wilson brought the margin back to level pegging – with some thinking another draw was on the cards for Springvale – but the Demons’ backline held firm and eventually cleared to Clint Brooks, who pulled down a great contested mark and passed off to Brad Dight to put the Demons ahead as the siren beckoned. Dight’s kick flew truly just before the siren wailed to give the unexpected win to the visitors.
Springvale Districts heads to Murrumbeena to push into the top four and better its 3-2 record.
Springvale Districts will host its annual Ladies’ Day on 31 May with all funds raised going to support the Breast Cancer Network Australia (BCNA). RSVPs to Sharon Thompson on 0401 497 492 will be accepted until 24 May.
Division 3
In the battle of Greater Dandenong, emerging victorious was Sandown to the tune of 31 points over Dandenong.
Keeping the home side scoreless in the first term, the Cobras struck five goals of their own as Clint Sheedy (3 goals) and Jake Chapman (3) found the uprights early.
The Redlegs rallied in the final term – through Cameron Riley (4 goals) who was best afield for Dandenong – as the side fought back to bring respectability to the final margin.
A seven-goal last term showed the signs of life for Dandenong, but Sandown had achieved enough in the opening three stanzas to walk away with the points.
John Frenken, James Hewitt and Jason Toan were best for the Cobras, which advance to fifth on the ladder while Dandenong falls to last.
Under lights on Friday night Lyndale claimed a 20-point win over Hallam with Shannon Deszcz (3 goals), Brett Tosh and Dale Tormey featuring prominently.
Lyndale now hosts Endeavour Hills in a battle for Heatherton Road while Sandown faces Ashwood at home and Dandenong heads to high-flying Carrum Patterson Lakes.
