Light shines on artistic flair

A PUBLIC art project in central Dandenong has won a commendation from the Australian Institute of Landscape Architects (AILA).
AILA hosted its Victoria Project Awards on 16 November and the Vessels of Light public art project, scattered around streets in central Dandenong and designed by Sinatra Murphy Pty Ltd, won the attention of judges.
Sinatra Murphy claimed the prize for its design work that AILA judges said highlighted “the diversity of landscape architectural practice”.
“The project was initiated to strengthen pedestrian connections between Dandenong Station and Dandenong Market,” the judges’ brief said.
“The form of the seven vessels is constructed from layers of individually cut sheets of polycarbonate of varying colour.
“The material appears to glow when refracting sunlight and is illuminated by LED lights at night.”
The award follows criticisms in July this year that the $91,000 project was tucked away in laneways in central Dandenong that people would avoid at night.
