A HEALTHY eating program in Greater Dandenong has won a National Heart Foundation award.
The Food for Everybody program run by the City of Greater Dandenong council and funded by VicHealth won the Healthy Eating for Children aged 0 to 5 award at the National Heart Foundation Kellogg Local Government Awards.
The program won at state level and received a high commendation at national level.
Outgoing mayor Youhorn Chea last week said the program, delivered in partnership with Dandenong Communities for Children (Mission Australia), had made a positive contribution to raising the profile of healthy eating for children, particularly for new arrivals to Australia.
“A key aim of the program is to increase the capacity of culturally diverse workers who have strong linkages with newly arrived families,” Cr Chea said.
“This is achieved through parent and mothers groups, which receive training on healthy eating for children. Their members become experts on good nutrition and can share this valuable knowledge with their peers.”
