KIDS who’ve spent their holidays running, rolling and resting on the Dandenong Civic Square lawn will be pleased to know it’s staying put.
On Monday night last week councillors night approved plans for City of Greater Dandenong to buy the land at the Thomas Street corner from Places Victoria for $900,000.
The council’s business manager Paul Kearsley said discussions had concluded that the municipality would be the most suitable owner of the land.
Places Victoria acquired the space for future development to do just that, but previous agreements secured the council the first opportunity to purchase it.
Mr Kearsley said the council was under no obligation to develop the 1006 square metre space but if it did, work would have to complement the existing square and building.
The council already owns the land where the civic centre and library stand and manages the Crown land where the square sits.
