GREATER Dandenong Council will spend $1.5 million to build new sporting facilities at Warner Reserve.
Councillors voted in favour of the option to demolish existing buildings and build newer ones that would cater for both current and future sport and recreational demand at the reserve.
Warner Reserve is home to two buildings on Flynn and Bird streets, used mainly by South Springvale Soccer Club and North Dandenong Cricket Club.
The Bird Street building suffered extensive damage from an internal fire last October and the South Springvale Soccer Club has had to move to the Flynn Street building.
Community Services director June Dugina said in a report to councillors that the council had three options as it approached a renewal phase for Warner Reserve.
Option one was to take no action, option two was to extend the Flynn Street building, and option three was to demolish the Flynn Street building and burnt shell at Bird Street, and create a new facility.
Councillors voted in support of the third option because it would cater for future growth in the sport of soccer.
Construction will take place between May 2009 and February 2010.
