VIKINGS, Shakespeare, pirates doing pilates – it’s all happening at the Drum Theatre in one action-packed night this month.
Students at Keysborough’s Killester College are rehearsing for their production of You’re History, a musical that traverses time after a nerdy teenager turns a portable classroom into a time machine.
A mischievous detention class is sent hurtling back through history on an excursion that no one will forget.
The time-warped team will discover vicious vikings, pilates-practising pirates, disco-happy gladiators, a rapping Romeo and Juliet and the infamous Oedipus appearing on the Jerry Springer Show.
As the drama unfolds, characters portray a poignant connection between history’s key clashes and today’s schoolyard.
When tensions reach a climactic crescendo, the social commentary is complemented by the light relief of a romantic sub-plot.
Producer Joanne Camilleri commended the girls on their rehearsals and was buoyant about the Drum Theatre.
“The script has provided an opportunity for all sorts of girls to get involved and there’s real team spirit among the crew,” she said.
“The theatre has supported a variety of school and community groups and we’re very excited to link up with them this year.”
You’re History premieres on Thursday 14 August, followed by shows on Friday 15 and Saturday 16 August, all at 7.30pm, at The Drum Theatre in Dandenong. There is also a Saturday matinee performance at 2pm Tickets cost $18 for adults and $10 concession. Bookings can be made through the theatre box office on 9771 6666 or by visiting www.drumtheatre. com.au.
