SPEED cameras will operate along EastLink from 1 September.
Victoria Police announced that cameras in the tollway’s two tunnels would start booking speeding motorists from 1 September.
Assistant Commissioner in charge of traffic, Ken Lay, said the cameras would complement police presence on the tollway.
“Since the Eastlink was opened in late June, police have had a strong presence on the road in an effort to deter motorists from breaking the law and capture those willing to take a risk,” Mr Lay said.
“This included Operation Eastlinker which ran for several weeks and involved 24-hour tasked patrols enforcing traffic offences.
“During this operation, police issued over 200 penalty notices for a range of offences and a high percentage of these were for speed.
“However, police also detected a significant number of motorists not wearing seatbelts, using mobile phones, unlicensed drivers, unregistered vehicles and those driving under the influence of alcohol.
“Local police believe this operation has been highly successful and plan on running it again in the coming weeks, so motorists who want to speed along the road have the biggest chance yet of being caught.”
Police first announced speed cameras would be installed on EastLink in February this year.
The tollway opened in June, and within the first week police had already booked a motorist for travelling in excess of 30km/h beyond the speed limit.
