THE Drum Theatre in Dandenong has won the 2008 Local Government Property Award.
The award, by the Australian Property Institute Victoria, recognises not only the quality of the building’s design but also the impact The Drum Theatre has had on the local community.
Greater Dandenong’s cultural facilities director Paul Streefkerk said it was the sixth award the Drum Theatre had received since it opened in February 2006.
“This award follows on from the honour of winning state and national building awards, as well as an architectural award from the prestigious Royal Australian Institute of Architects,” he said.
“The Drum has become a landmark in Greater Dandenong and this latest award is a fine achievement for the venue.”
Mr Streefkerk said The Drum Theatre had been the dream of the region’s performing arts community for many years.
“Greater Dandenong now has a venue the entire community values and can be truly proud of,” he said.
“The Drum Theatre provides a unique opportunity for people from all walks of life to watch, enjoy and participate in the arts.”
The Drum Theatre hosts more than 200 performances each year and was visited by 90,000 people in 2007/08.
