HAND Brake Turn in Dandenong is looking for old cars that can be rebuilt to standards and donated to bushfire victims left without a means of transport.
“Basically, there are a lot of people who need to get to work and keep their income coming in,” Hand Brake Turn employee Marc Clothier said.
“There are also a lot of parents that need to get their children to school, so donating cars to them is just a starting point.”
Mr Clothier said young adults at Hand Brake Turn were ecstatic to help those affected by the fires, while also doing something they were passionate about.
“They are really looking forward to helping out,” Mr Clothier said.
“These young kids go through about five courses a year at Hand Brake Turn.
“They have fallen out of the school system, some of them had a bit of trouble with police.
“They are just pleased to be able to work on cars, but are really happy to be doing something worthwhile.” Staff at Hand Brake Turn volunteered to work overtime to help the students rebuild the cars as quickly as possible.
Staff at other local businesses put their hands up to help, including Auto Care Car in Hallam, who will do the roadworthy tests at no cost.
Mr Clothier said anyone willing to donate a car can call Hand Brake Turn at 9793 1466.
The cars must be able to run, and only require a normal licence to drive.
