Painting a picture of modern society

Haileybury Year 12 Haileybury Year 12

By Shaun Inguanzo
KEYSBOROUGH student Simon Hedt is set to make a statement with a piece of work inspired by American artist Andy Warhol.
Simon’s artwork will be on display at the annual Haileybury VCE Visual Arts Exhibition, this year called The Changing Face, along with over 200 other works by Year 11 and 12 VCE students.
The exhibition will take place at the Keysborough campus’ new art gallery, completed earlier this year, and will be opened by National Gallery of Victoria senior officer Paula Lindley on Monday, 7 November at 6pm.
Works will include paintings, sketches, interactive games, sculptures, graphic design and short films.
Simon’s main piece has been painted with acrylic and consists of several layers.
The Year 12 student has taken a bold step and painted company logos and then a face to create what he calls a modernist piece in the style of American artist Andy Warhol.
“It is making a statement on corporate domination throughout society,” Mr Hedt said.
“ My main piece is in acrylic paint on canvas and I also did one similar in a collage where I printed off logos and collated them onto big pieces of flyboard.”
But statements aside, Simon said he would eventually sell his works.
“I am going to look around and see if I can get my two main pieces of the exhibition in a small private gallery and sell them off to make some money.
“I have got no room at home, and I painted them so the public could see them, and I want to get the message out into the public art scene.”
He finishes his VCE exams this week and will seek a career in visual design.
“I want to get into design next year, I have also got a traineeship lined up in architectural drafting.
“Anything in the design field is what I want to do.”
He said he would continue his passion for art, formed at a young age, but keep it as a creative outlet rather than a career.
Simon and other students’ works will be on display at Haileybury’s Ralph W. Hill Memorial Gallery, Senior School Campus, 855891 Springvale Road, Keysborough, between the 7 and 11 November.
