Lions blown away

By Bridget Brady
TOP-OF-THE-TABLE Werribee ended the Springvale Lions’ five-game winning streak, with a close encounter on the weekend.
In a low-scoring game, Werribee defeated the Lions 1-0 during some of the windiest conditions coach Glen Richards had experienced.
“The wind was howling, which made it tougher,” he said.
Richards said it was a hard-fought game and was pleased with his team’s performance against the top side. Richards said the players should feel positive they came so close.
“We had chances throughout the game to score and didn’t manage to capitalise and they (Werribee) ended up scoring their run in the ninth innings.”
Robert Hogan pitched an outstanding game on the weekend, Richards said.
The Lions are sitting in about the middle of the ladder, in eighth place, which did not reflect the team’s true capabilities in the competition, Richards said.
After a few losses earlier in the season, Richards said the Lions had played some good baseball since Christmas.
Last week’s match against Williamstown was washed out and was rescheduled to last night. The Lions take on 13th-placed Berwick this weekend.
The women also took on the top side during round 16, and were successful with a 10-7 victory against the Doncaster team.
The women sit on second place on the ladder.
