Heatherton breaks through for first win

By Gavin Staindl
FOLLOWING three frustrating draws, Heatherton United produced its first win of the season, beating Casey Comets 1-0 at Comets stadium.
Heatherton forced the Comets to its first home defeat in Division Two since mid-July last year, and the win has given United much-needed confidence heading into their “crucial” clash with Doncaster.
“It is good to finally get the results,” Heatherton coach Miro Kupinic said. “We could be on top of the ladder on 12 points but we have missed our chances. (Casey) had some opportunities early on in the match but we settled down and had some chances but again we muffed them and I thought ‘oh no, here we go again’.”
“We have been knocking on the door and knocking on the door but no-one has been answering,” an annoyed Kupinic said.
The door of opportunity was finally answered on Saturday when Ali Sanad scored the only goal for the match.
The pacey mid-left scored a classy individual goal late in the first half after dodging three defenders and slotting the ball into the top corner.
“It was a good win for sure. We persevered and persevered and we got there,” Kupinic said.
The perseverance of the young Heatherton side has, according to Kupinic, made up for the squandered chances in front of goal.
“We have a very good work ethic when we do not have the ball and every team we play has to earn their goals off us,” Kupinic said.
And, after only conceding three goals from the first three rounds, expect Heatherton to grind out Doncaster in a similar fashion in next week’s encounter.
In the other Division Two match, the SOUTHERN STARS continued on its winning way, beating cross-town rivals Dandenong City 1-0 at Ross Reserve.
High-profile signing Conner McDonald was the only goal scorer as the Turkish/Irish outfit extended its undefeated run to four games.
In Division Three, NOBLE PARK battled out a 2-2 draw with Springvale City at Parkfield Reserve, while KINGSTON CITY edged out South Springvale 2-1 on Monday night in the highly anticipated clash at the Grange Reserve.
In Division One the SPRINGVALE WHITE EAGLES went down to the Western Suburbs 3-1 at Ralph Reserve.
