THE DANDENONG Chamber of Commerce has welcomed the announcement of a $150 million industrial and commercial hub in Dandenong South.
Dandenong Logis, at the site of a decommissioned Melbourne Water sewerage plant near Greens and Hammond Roads, Dandenong South, will take eight years to complete. It will become a 180-hectare hub of logistics companies, industrial businesses and commercial businesses and will be suurounded by future arterial roads, EastLink and the Dandenong South Bypass. Chamber president David Carlson said the land would relieve some demand for industrial and commercial real estate in Greater Dandenong.
“There is continued demand for extra space to be allocated for commercial development within the Greater City of Dandenong,” he said.
“The Green Wedge puts pressure on the space able to be allotted for development so this provides a partial answer to reducing the Green Wedge further.” Mr Carlson also praised the announcement of a central logistics hub.
“The introduction of logistics companies makes sense because the increased number of other businesses being set up or moved to Dandenong has created a demand for the products being manufactured to be transported out of Dandenong,” he said. “The easy access to Eastlink and the Dandenong Bypass make the Treatment Plant site a logical location.”
Mr Carlson said the chamber had consulted with council’s economic development unit and saw no issue with the development.
“The fact the site will be developed on an old sewerage plant is not of a concern,” he said. “Technology will assist in ensuring the effectiveness of the sealing within the pod underground and the Government’s tough stance on workplace safety should ensure that all precautions that need to be taken, including the appropriate testing.”
