Mixer mangles woman’s arm

By Nicole Williams
A SPRINGVALE worker suffered a serious arm injury after getting caught in an industrial mixing machine at a bakery on Police Road.
Her arm was caught at 1pm on Friday and she was dragged into the machine, prompting fears she may have also suffered burns from the hot food inside the mixer.
The woman, in her late forties, did not suffer burns but had significant injuries to her upper arm and body.
WorkSafe spokesman Michael Birt said WorkSafe was investigating the accident.
“A woman was using an industrial mixer in a bakery and she’s been caught in it,” he said. “But we don’t know exactly what happened in this case.”
Ambulance Victoria paramedics took 30 minutes to free the woman and she was taken to The Alfred hospital in a critical condition.
Mr Birt said it was important all machines had the appropriate safety guards, even when undergoing maintenance.
“Businesses in the south-east, from a small bakery to the bigger ones, make sure your machines are guarded,” he said.
“People don’t want to end up with more cases like this one.”
