MELBOURNE’S newest trams were unveiled at Bombardier’s Dandenong factory yesterday.
Transport Minister Terry Mulder inspected a mock-up of the Bombardier FLEXITY trams yesterday and said the design was a result of consultation with a range of passenger groups.
“We have involved tram drivers, elderly passengers and passengers with disabilities, including passengers with wheelchairs, scooters or low vision,” Mr Mulder said.
“The construction of the mock-up had helped a range of passengers to experience the look and feel of the new tram.”
Fifty of the new trams will be built by Bombardier and will be delivered by late next year.
They will carry 210 passengers and include lower floors, slip resistant floors, air-conditioning and state-of-the-art audio and visual equipment.
“The investment in 50 new trams will help ensure the tram network remains and iconic part of Melbourne,” Mr Mulder said.
