The female is deadlier than the male

By Gavin Staindl
THE three female Springvale baseball teams are the talk of the town after reaching the Christmas break undefeated in all three grades.
The Division One, Two and Three Lions capped off the perfect start to the season by clinching wins on Saturday with the Division One win over Footscray the highlight of the weekend.
Racing out to an early lead, the Lions never looked back and stacked on a 12-2 win at Wearne Reserve.
Such is the dominance between the three sides in their respective grades that they have an in-house competition to see who will be the last team left undefeated.
But the mid-season break has been met with mixed emotions in the men’s camp as the Lions continued their late run of form with a 4-2 win over Williamstown at Greenwich Reserve.
The Lions are 3-1 from their four matches in December but while coach Mick Wearne would love to see how far their hot-streak can last, he also understands his veterans will benefit from the two-week rest.
One only had to look at the relief on the players’ faces as they made their way back to the dugout for the final time this year to understand how important the break is for this playing group.
With veterans like Miles Barnden and Rob Hogan throwing nine-inning games, including Hogan who threw for 100-plus pitches on Sunday, and a playing roster that has been stretched for the majority of the season, Lions coach Mick Wearne was well within his right to suggest his players had earned the two-weeks off.
“We’ve been under the pump so to make the break is a bit of a relief,” Wearne said.
“While we were upbeat because of the win it was a sigh of relief because we’ve put in a lot of work to get where we are. It was an important game to win too, because it means we are still in the hunt for finals but from here every game gets tougher.”
