HAILEYBURY College Keysborough student, Joseph Moore, didn’t even want to check his VCE results on Friday morning.
But when Melbourne University rang to congratulate him on his perfect ATAR score of 99.95, the first thing he wanted to do was get off the phone to check for himself.
“I was a bit too nervous and didn’t want to check the results,” he said.
“Then I got a call from Melbourne Uni and I was so shocked that I just wanted to put the phone down straight away and tell everyone.”
The perfect score puts Joseph in the top 0.05 per cent of students in Australia.
“I didn’t think I would do terribly but I didn’t think I would do that well.”
When he finally got to spread the good news, his family, friends and teachers were extremely proud.
“I think my mum shed a tear,” he said.
“And my teachers seem pretty happy.”
The 17-year-old said he played to his strengths when choosing his VCE subjects and focused on humanities like history, literature and philosophy.
During the year, he remained focused and studied each night according to a timetable.
“I completed my homework every night and made notes for revision,” he said.
“Everything I did was time-tabled and I had a goal so I wasn’t randomly looking over notes. I made sure I had something to show for it.”
Melbourne University were first to offer Joseph a full scholarship for a Bachelor degree of his choice.
“I always intended to go the Melbourne so they’re not tempting me away from anywhere,” he said,
“I will do a Bachelor of Arts followed by Law and I am looking toward law or politics for a career.”
He handed in the scholarship papers on Monday and now won’t have to face the anxious wait for university offers in January.
“It all begins from here.”
Surprise perfection
