SPRINGVALE North has confirmed itself as a tennis club on the rise with a haul of four junior premierships over the weekend.
Wins in the A Reserve 1 Open, C Special 4 Boys, C Grade 4 and D Grade 3 divisions have signalled a mini-renaissance at Warner Reserve.
The Open side defeated Oakleigh two rubbers to one in a close final, while the rest of the teams had comfortable victories in their finals.
Young gun Bryan Chhour led the way in the A Reserve 1 final, storming through his singles rubber 6-3 6-1 before backing up for a win in the doubles.
Meanwhile, 11-year-old Bond Phu won all but three games in four sets of tennis for the weekend, playing in the C Special 4 Boys premiership on Saturday as well as the C Grade 1 title on Sunday.
Head coach Stephen Sruk said the junior teams had exceeded the club’s expectations this season, given that the vast majority of junior players were aged between 11 and 15.
“Over the last two to three years we’ve definitely been on a winning scale and most clubs are looking up to us now,” Sruk said. “It’s going to get a lot harder next season because all our kids are going to move up now.
“They’re going to have to keep improving and practising to compete at the next level.”
