Water dumped on scrap fire

A SCRAP metal fire in Noble Park last week took firefighters 45 minutes to contain.
The fire at SimsMetal on Princes Highway happened at 1.30pm on 27 January.
Dandenong Aerial Platform used high volumes of water to put the fire out. Pumpers from Dandenong and Noble Park supplied a relay of water from Princes Highway over long hose lengths while firefighters worked with site staff to help extinguish the fire.
Dandenong CFA regional officer Trevor Owen said the fire had been started by one of the cars catching alight after the petrol tank burst when it was crushed.
“It’s fairly uncommon. They rupture each tank before crushing but about one in 500 cars is missed,” Mr Owen said.
