Here comes the baton… just in time for Games

THE Queen’s Baton Relay will arrive in Dandenong on 2 March, as it is carried across Victoria to the MCG for the opening ceremony of the 2006 Commonwealth Games.
“It’s an honour for Dandenong to be able to welcome the Queen’s Baton on the final leg of its international relay, as it crosses Melbourne’s eastern and southern suburbs,” MP for Dandenong John Pandazopoulos said.
The relay began at Buckingham Palace on 14 March, 2005, and the baton holds a message from the Queen to be delivered to Commonwealth Games athletes at the MCG on 15 March.
For the first time in the Games’ history, the baton has visited all 71 nations of the Commonwealth.
The baton also contains two cameras and a sound recorder.
“I hope that our community groups, schools, families and individuals will gather together to line the roads and cheer the baton and its runner on their way,” Mr Pandazopoulos said.
