A TEAM of printers is hoping to raise several thousand dollars for the Springvale Benevolent Society by running in the Melbourne Marathon this October.
But the dedicated group of runners from AIW Printing in Springvale is calling upon the community to sponsor their team to raise money for the needy charity.
The company has started the fund raising pool with a $2000 donation and pre-press worker Kevin Mannix, who will run the full 42.2 kilometres of the marathon, said the company would also ask suppliers to pitch in. “Four of us did the run last year and thought we should make a day of it this year,” Mr Mannix said.
“Then someone suggested that we turn it into a fundraiser and so we approached the City of Greater Dandenong council for ideas.”
Mr Mannix said AIW Printing wanted to help a charity that was both local and short of funding and so the council recommended the Springvale Benevolent Society.
He said upwards of 40 people from AIW Printing would be taking part in the Melbourne Marathon on 7 October, but only a handful would brave the full marathon.
“We have got two people running the full marathon, eight running the half-marathon, and the rest will be running or walking the shorter distances.”
The Melbourne Marathon will start and finish at the Melbourne Cricket Ground, with shorter distance runners taking a scenic tour around the Yarra River.
The full distance runners will travel down to Beach Road before heading back to the Melbourne Cricket Ground and finishing with a lap on the hallowed turf.
