A $12,000 CHRISTMAS concert at Dandenong’s Drum Theatre will take place this year amid objections from councillors wanting the funds spent on roadworks.
Greater Dandenong Council this week voted in favour of an inaugural Christmas concert at the Drum Theatre with the $12,000 bill to be footed by the remains of a Federal Government grant.
Mayor Peter Brown put forward the notice of motion that attracted debate and polarised the council.
Springvale North Ward councillor Alan Gordon said the idea sounded good, but his ward had other priorities.
“The residents would rather see local area traffic management devices installed instead of having a free concert,” he said.
But Keysborough Ward councillor Roz Blades said given councillors and VIPs had enjoyed a free opening night at the Drum Theatre in February, it was fitting residents had the same opportunity.
“It may only be 500 or so people but those people will be receiving a free gift from the City of Greater Dandenong,” she said.
Cr Brown said the 530-capacity theatre would be filled by a ballot that council would work out at a later date.
