GREATER Dandenong council has launched the $91,000 Vessels of Light project aimed at injecting night-time public art into the city centre.
The venture was jointly funded by the City of Greater Dandenong and VicUrban as part of the Revitalising Central Dandenong project.
It last week drew criticism from the Dandenong Retail Traders’ Association for some of the decorative lights being hidden away in unlit laneways and alleys.
But on Tuesday it was all smiles as artists and council staff who had collaborated on the project launched and then toured the series of ‘art markers’.
The council said in a statement that arts company Sinatra Murphy worked with Ausplastics to develop the unique glowing plastic lights.
Greater Dandenong mayor Youhorn Chea said in the statement that the lights were part of a series of major changes for central Dandenong.
“The Vessels of Light are a partnership between council and VicUrban which contributes to some of the many instantly visible projects that are regularly taking place in the heart of the city,” he said.
“Dandenong, as we know it, is transforming into a vibrant city centre we can all be proud of.”
