Young Enterprise Award – the nominees

Ben Scoble
Anthony Tesselaar International

BEN Scoble dabbled in retail after leaving school at age 15.
He soon realised that retail was not his desired career path and was left wondering which direction to take.
But in 2002 he started an apprenticeship in horticulture at Lintons Garden and Home and soon realised that horticulture was his dream career.
Ben hasn’t looked back since and has obtained a Certificate III in Horticulture (Nursery) at Chisholm Institute of TAFE.
Within 18 months of his apprenticeship Ben was in charge of seedlings at Lintons and established an environmentally safe chemical spraying program.
With his passion for horticulture and outstanding initiative, it was no surprise that Ben was headhunted in November 2005 to become production coordinator with Anthony Tesselaar International.
He grew all of the flowers for the company’s stand at the 2006 Melbourne International Flower and Garden Show after just finishing his apprenticeship April last year at the young age of 22.
Ben has a hunger for knowledge and as such has a vast library of horticultural books, and often keeps up to date on the Internet. He is a founding member of Next-Gen, an organisation established to attract and recruit people to the industry.

Dylan McCabe
Grenda’s Transit Management

PUBLIC transport is the backbone of many people’s travels.
So it’s reassuring to know that young people like Dylan McCabe will be around to maintain the buses of one of Victoria’s biggest buslines, and Dandenong business, Grenda’s.
Dylan completed Year 11 at Lyndhurst Secondary College and took part in the school’s Jobs Pathway program.
The program helped Dylan, who already had a technical and mechanical mind, apply for a an apprenticeship in heavy vehicle mechanics with Grenda’s.
After finishing his apprenticeship he was employed fulltime by Grenda’s where he has since excelled in bus maintenance.
He has taken on any challenge that Grenda’s is willing to throw at him, and has earned the respect of group maintenance manager Ivan Pitcher.
Mr Pitcher said Dylan applied himself across the board and as such can opeate the stores system, is competent using the omputer network, understands pricing, sourcing and lead times associated with parts acquisition – all of this as well as being able to repair and maintain buses.
Dylan works on the Green Cross outreach bus operated by the City of Greater Dandenong.
The bus provides educational material to students on illicit drugs, fitness, diet and other health and wellbeing related matters.
In his spare time Dylan plays pool and basketball, and enjoys spending time with friends and family.
He aspires to one day have a management position in the industry.
