GREATER Dandenong Council is working on a sustainable lighting plan in order to cut greenhouse emissions while also saving dollars.
The city has already slashed greenhouse emissions by purchasing ‘green’ electricity – produced by means other than brown coal – but is looking at ways of using less electricity.
A report to council this week urged councillors to support, in principle, guidelines for sustainable lighting practices.
The report also asked councillors to support the development of a business case for sustainable lighting so the city could take another step towards achieving its goal of becoming ‘environmentally active’.
The council spends $960,000 each year on electricity to power 1155 public lights.
The plan will return to the council in either July or August.
