LOCAL theatregoers should be prepared for a very special house call next month when Little Shop of Horrors comes to pay a visit.
Students from Haileybury College’s Keysborough campus will take part in the performance alongside students from Toorak College and Haileybury’s other campuses.
As one of the longest running offBroadway shows, this affectionate spoof of 1950s sciencefiction movies will offer audiences a hilarious, quirky and macabre evening, according to director Stewart Bell.
“Little Shop of Horrors is very charming and, with tongue firmly planted in cheek, it never fails to entertain,” Mr Bell said.
“Our spirited cast have put a tremendous amount of effort into the play and have already been generating nonstop laughs during rehearsals.
“Combine this with a clever and catchy R and B score, and I’m sure it will entertain all who come to watch it,” he said.
Little Shop of Horrors is the story of Seymour Krelborn, a meek Skid Row florist who becomes an overnight sensation when he discovers an exotic plant with a mysterious craving for human flesh.
He makes a pact with the tiny plant in order to win the heart of Audrey, the girl he loves.
While Audrey doesn’t notice the romance blooming between them, she does recognise the moneymaking potential of the exotic little plant.
Soon the plant grows into an illtempered R and B singing carnivore that offers him fame and fortune in exchange for feeding its growing appetite.
As the plant grows, its demands for food grow too, and Seymour starts to suspect that the plant might have an agenda larger than light and soil.
Little Shop of Horrors will be performed on 10, 11 and 12 August at Aikman Hall, Haileybury Senior School, 855891 Springvale Rd, Keysborough. For bookings call 92132222.
