GREATER Dandenong council has kick started the replacement of 150 city bus shelters.
The older shelters will be replaced by a new breed of architecturally designed, access-friendly and safely lit structures.
Many of the shelters will use solar panels to power courtesy lights within the facility.
The first of these new shelters has been installed along Springvale Road, Springvale, and in the Dandenong CBD.
There are about 200 bus shelters throughout the city, all varying in age and style.
Several existing older-style bus shelters will be relocated to locations that are not utilised as much as other shelters.
To provide and maintain the shelters, the council agreed to the use of advertising on some of the new shelters.
The council is hoping the new shelters will be stronger, safer, and more functional and will be designed to provide access to everyone as they will be compliant with the Disability Standards for Accessible Public Transport.
