A CITY of Greater Dandenong councillor has slammed the state of the city’s streets.
Cr Angela Long said delays in collecting hard rubbish had made the city look appalling.
At Monday’s council meeting she demanded to know why rubbish had been left on nature strips longer than anticipated.
“The rubbish has been left out in the streets and it looks absolutely appalling,” Cr Long said.
“Stud Road, Gladstone Road… it’s the same over the whole city.
“The contractor should have had it picked up on the days that were stated.”
Cr Long said the problem was made worse by scavengers who were illegally rifling through the waste and creating a bigger mess.
City of Greater Dandenong’s director of engineering services Tim Tamlin said the contractor scheduled to pick up the waste had experienced equipment difficulties.
“The contractor is now working to get back to the target dates.”
The collection commenced on Monday, 11 July and, according to a council statement, was now behind schedule.
The statement continued: “Unforeseen problems have caused delays for some of the proposed collection dates but residents can be assured that their waste will be collected.
“Residents who have not had their rubbish removed are reminded to consult their brochure outlining what is acceptable for collection.
“Inappropriate materials left on nature strips after the collection has taken place should be removed to avoid fines,” the statement read.
