THE tradesmen working on stage two of the Dandenong Hospital redevelopments are proving handy in more ways than one.
Apart from the major hospital works, they’ve been raising money for toys and play equipment for patients in the children’s ward and emergency department.
Abigroup, the construction team behind the project, has held regular fundraising events for the hospital.
Apart from toys, the donations have enabled the hospital to buy audiovisual equipment and medical instruments such as an icemaker and thermometers.
Abigroup’s senior construction manager Lance Sleeman said hospital projects were among the most satisfying jobs his company has worked on.
“It’s such a real contribution to society. Abigroup encourages active participation in its working and neighbourhood environments and are proud of the way the project has been delivered,” he said.
Play therapist with Dandenong Hospital, Joanne Hogan, said the donation was a great boost for children.
“Abigroup have donated several televisions, a stroller, ice machine, thermometers, a lifesize musical Santa and an abundance of toys, posters and games to the children’s ward,” Ms Hogan said.
“All of these have been a wonderful addition to the toys we have available for the children to play with.
“Play helps the children cope with their illness and the stress of hospitalisation.
“The Abigroup has also donated a television, toys and posters to the Emergency Department.
“We are all very appreciative of such kind and greatly needed donations for the children.”
New facilities being built at Dandenong include an intensive care unit, two acute care wards and one rehabilitation ward and two operating theatres.
