TENNIS aces Aaron and Josh Tran are
proving a hit in their sport.
The brothers from Endeavour Hills Ten
nis Club recently won their respective
events at a Waverley and District Tennis
Association (WDTA) tournament at the
North Ringwood Tennis Club.
Josh, 10, said he has been playing ten
nis of years.
“I started lessons when I was five and
started competition when I was 10,” he said.
His success at the recent tournament
was in the 10-and-under age group, in
which he dominated his opponents, winning
6-3, 6-4 in the final.
Josh said it was his forehand that got
him over the line.
“I work hard on my forehand at train
ing, it is my strongest shot,” he said.
“My serve is okay.
“I try and serve aces, but it doesn’t work
out all the time.”
His mother, Glenys, said Josh plays reg
ular competition against bigger boys.
“He plays in the C3 grade and this year
he has only played boys older than him,”
she said.
“When they shake hands at the net, Josh
only comes up to his opponent’s waist,” Ms
Tran laughed.
Aaron, 14, also won the 14-and-under
competition at the WDTA tournament, tak
ing the final in three tough sets.
“I lost the first set, but turned the match
around and won the next two,” he said.
Aaron is developing his skills by work
ing with a high-intensity training group.
“We train at Melbourne Park,” he said,
“I’ve even played on Margaret Court
Arena.”
Locally, Aaron plays in the Pennant
Three Division for Endeavour Hills and has
his sights set on playing State Grade.
“I aim to be playing State Grade by the
time I’m 16,” he said.
Aaron said his strength was his net
game.
“But I’m working on my mental tough
ness, that’s so important,” he said.
When it comes to the competition
between the Tran brothers, Aaron said Josh
was quickly catching up.
“He is getting heaps better, he actually
beat me last week,” he said.
“But I was just playing to see if I was fit
enough to play the following day, and I was
n’t.”
