YARRAMAN Station should be staffed to increase passenger safety, a local MP says.
South Eastern Metropolitan MP Gordon Rich-Phillips said this week Yarraman Station should be classified a Premium Station, meaning it would be staffed, to encourage more people to use public transport.
“Survey responses to my office from local constituents clearly indicates that many people do not feel safe travelling on public transport and are reluctant to travel alone,” he said.
“Many people, mostly females, are too frightened to travel on trains at any time of the day. Police statistics indicate that crimes against the person in the Greater Dandenong area are still high and that for the 2007/08 period, there were 112 rapes, 1091 assaults, and 169 robberies. When you consider this, is it any wonder a lone commuter sitting at Yarraman Rail Station may feel vulnerable?”
The Star phoned Connex to see if the train operator had plans to make Yarraman a premium station but did not receive a reply before deadline.
