DANDENONG has been named one of the top 10 hoon areas in Victoria.
The announcement comes as Victoria police broke their previous annual records at the weekend when they impounded their 3000th vehicle this year.
The yellow 1984 Toyota Corolla was confiscated in Preston under the legislation which came into use in 2006.
Vehicles were impounded across Victoria at a rate of 50 per week during 2007 with the rate increasing to 61 in 2008.
Inspector Tom McGillian said the growth in confiscations could be attributed to several reasons.
“There is a strong belief that there are significant road safety benefits by removing the ability for idiot drivers to commit these offences,” he said.
Drivers who choose to exceed the speed by more than 45km/h, engage in dangerous driving practices or street race against other motorists are among those who have had their vehicle being towed away for an initial 48 hours.
Excessive speed remains the most popular reason for impoundment with 38 per cent of drivers losing their vehicle for travelling at 45km/h or more over the speed limit.
